Place of Romania world-wide:
- area under vine (5th position in the EU) behind Spain, France, Italy and Portugal.
- grape production (5th position in the EU) behind Italy, Spain, France and Germany.
- wine production (6th position in the EU), behind Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Germany.
- among the first 15 countries in the world with regard to area under vine.

The total area under vine remained unchanged in 2019, namely: 182.6 thousand ha. The vineyards continued to go through an ample process of restructuring and reconversion, assisted with EU funds from the national support programme allocated to Romania (i.e. 47.5 million Euro, annually, during the budgetary exercise 2014-2020).

Following a series of unfavourable weather conditions, the wine production diminished to a level of 3,897.2 thousand hl in 2019.

In 2019, Romanian wine exports reached a level of 233.5 thousand hl, in value of 30.9 million Euro, up 1.6% in value terms compared to the previous year.

In 2019, Romania’s wine imports reached a level of 360.2 thousand hl, in value of 62.9 million Euro, very close to the levels achieved in 2018. During the period 2007-2019 the wine imports evolution of Romania looked as follows, in quantity and value terms:
The top ten countries of origin held in 2019 a share of 97.7.0% in value terms.

By main countries of origin, Romania’s wine imports in 2019 were the following:

Imports in 2019 were mainly originating from countries like Italy, Moldova Rep., France, Spain and Germany.
